AI Photos vs Traditional Photoshoots: How to Compare the Real Cost

AI photos usually cost less per image than a photoshoot, but nobody can give you an honest average for either side. Day rates, studio fees and retouching prices vary by city, by photographer and by what you shoot. The only comparison that holds up is your own: cost per usable image, worked out from real quotes and real output.

This guide gives you the worksheet. It also covers the platform rules that decide how far AI photos can replace a shoot, because on some platforms they cannot replace it at all.

Why there is no single number

Search for “photoshoot cost” and you will find confident figures, often down to the dollar. Most of them come from agencies or tool sellers and rarely say where the numbers came from. We could not trace them to a primary source, so we do not repeat them here.

The useful question is narrower: what does a shoot cost you, and how many images from it do you actually post? Then ask the same question about AI photos.

What goes into a photoshoot bill

A shoot costs more than the photographer’s fee. Ask for every line below in writing before you book.

Two rules affect shoots with other people. If explicit content includes someone other than you, OnlyFans requires you to show they are over 18 and have consented, for example by tagging their verified OnlyFans account or sending them OnlyFans’ own verification invitation. And under the Terms of Use, if your content uses third-party material, you need “all rights, licenses, authorisations, written consents and releases that are necessary”.

What goes into AI photos

AI photos have fewer lines, but they are not free of cost or effort.

The review line is the one people underestimate. Not every generation is usable. Hands, backgrounds and small details still fail sometimes, and a set only works if the face matches across every image.

The worksheet: cost per usable image

Use the same formula for both sides.

1. Add up the total cost. For a shoot, every line in the first table. For AI, one month of subscription.
2. Add your time. Put a value on your own hours, even a rough one. Hours spent on a shoot or on prompting are hours you are not chatting with fans or making other content.
3. Count the usable images. Not the number delivered or generated, but the number you would actually post or sell.
4. Divide. Total cost plus time, divided by usable images, gives your cost per usable image.

Run it for one real shoot and one real month of AI work. The result is a number you can trust, because every input is yours.

Two adjustments make the comparison fairer:

• Shelf life. Shoot images can stay useful for months. AI photos are quicker to replace, so you may need fewer of each set.
• Variety. One shoot day gives you a limited number of settings and outfits. AI photos let you change the setting, outfit and light without booking another day.

The rules that change the math

Before you count AI photos as a replacement, check what each platform allows. Each rule below links to the platform’s own page, read on 5 October 2026.

• OnlyFans allows AI content only if “it clearly features the verified Creator”, a fan can tell it is AI through “a signifier such as #ai, or #AIGenerated”, and it follows the Terms and Acceptable Use Policy, per the Terms of Use and the Help Centre article Can I post AI content on OnlyFans?. The moderation guide lists “accounts or content that are wholly AI-generated” and content that “features heavily altered images” among what you cannot share. • Fanvue allows fully AI-generated content with a disclosure that is “clear and prominent”, in the bio, the caption or a watermark, per its AI content article.
• MYM asks for “Virtual Image”, #AI or #AIgenerated on AI content, per its AI content guide.
• Fansly says “Photorealistic AI-generated content is not allowed on Fansly”, and labelling it does not make it permissible, per its AI content article.

What this means for the worksheet:

• On OnlyFans, AI photos can replace some shoot days, but only with content of you. You still need real reference photos, and every AI post needs the label.
• On Fansly, photorealistic AI photos cannot replace anything. Keep your shoot budget.
• On Fanvue and MYM, a fully AI persona is possible with disclosure, so the comparison is closest to a pure tool cost.

One more rule applies everywhere you sell. The OnlyFans Acceptable Use Policy prohibits “misleading descriptions of media”. Do not sell an AI set as a filmed or photographed shoot.

Where shoots still win

AI photos are not the better choice for every job.

• Reference photos. The quality of your AI photos depends on the quality of your references. A simple, well-lit shoot is often the best source.
• Content with other people. Collaborations need real people who have verified their age and consent.
• Fansly. Photorealistic AI is banned there, labelled or not.
• Moments fans expect to be real. Anything you describe as a real event or a real custom should be real.

Where AI photos earn their place

AI photos are strongest where a shoot is slow or expensive to repeat.

• Variety. New settings, outfits and light without a new booking.
• Turnaround. A themed set the same day, instead of waiting for a shoot and retouching.
• Safe-for-work teasers. Clothed promo images for your social accounts, in the format each platform needs.
• Filling gaps. A week off, an injury, or a month with no budget for a shoot.

A hybrid plan that keeps the costs honest

Many creators land on a mix, and it works well with the OnlyFans rules.

1. Book one simple shoot. Aim for clean, varied reference photos of yourself, plus a set you can post as it is.
2. Keep the original files. Use the files from your phone or the photographer, not images taken from OnlyFans. The Terms of Use say you may not use any tool “designed to collect any data or information from Content”, or use Content “to train or enhance any software, machine learning or artificial intelligence system”.
3. Build your identity once from those references, then generate AI photos for variety.
4. Label every AI piece for OnlyFans and keep a simple log of which files are AI.
5. Rerun the worksheet after a month and adjust the mix.
